Every year on the 17th June, South Africa, and the world, celebrate Mandela Day. This year Nelson Mandela would’ve been 100 years old! We celebrate this day in hour of the inspiring man he was and the legacy of hope, equality, possibility and change that he left behind.
In South Africa many people, organisations, and businesses dedicate 67 minutes of their time (one minute representing one year that Nelson Mandela publicly served our country) to a worthy cause, or spending time doing something for someone in need. It’s a wonderful reminder of how valuable and rewarding it is to give freely of your time every day in any small way.
This year we went to a childrens home in Beacon Valley, Mitchell’s Plain, called Baitul Ansaar and we handed out some hygiene products to the kids, and spent some time with them. We also took soup and gave it to the local community.
Although we only celebrate Mandela Day once a year, it should inspire us to acknowledge those around us that do so much for us, as well setting aside some time every day, every week, or even just every month to help someone who needs it. Nelson Mandela continues to inspire us every day with his messages of grace, courage, and strength.
