As a graphic designer, this might be on your to-do list of creative projects, and as a business owner, you might want to make sure your branding is 100% original – either way, it’s important to keep a few things in mind when it comes to how to design your own font.
5 Tips on How To Design Your Own Font
Decide What You Want
What is the look you are going for? Will it be Serif or Sans Serif? Lowercase and capital letters or capital letters only? Will you need italic and bold variations? Will it be quite abstract or does it need to look like handwriting? The options are endless, so make sure you have clarity on this first before you begin the design process.
Design Control Characters First
With lowercase letters, your control characters would be “n” and “o”, and with capital letters your control characters would be “H” and “O”.
Hand Draw and then Digitize
Depending on your skills, it is often helpful to play around with pen and paper first before moving onto any design/font creation programs – get the rough design down and then begin the digitising process, which will allow you to play around further, refining your font.
Choose Your Design Program
There are many incredible resources and programs available – see the resource links below, which offer more insights into these programs.
Experiment with your Font
Scale it down – is it legible when small? Create different words and sentences using as many letters as possible to see how they correspond next to one another – not forgetting the infamous sentence – the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog – which contains all the letters in the alphabet.
