Mandela Day 2017
On the 18th July every year many people around South Africa and around the world celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday – it is a day of remembrance as well as a day of celebration. We honour his life and his achievements by dedicating 67 minutes of our day doing good and helping those in need. Many South Africans take part as a token of their appreciation for the inspiring man he was.
A quote on the official Mandela Day 2017 website states, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela inspired those around him to not only make changes in their own lives, but to create changes in the lives of others too. Taking part in Mandela Day is an opportunity to reach out to others, connect with your neighbours, friends, colleagues, and family, and give of your time.
The ways in which you can help others on this special day is endless – you can volunteer your time at a shelter, build homes for the homeless, knit blankets for those who need them during the winter months, make food for those who would otherwise go hungry, play music and donate the proceeds to a charity, spend time with children teaching them a skill you’ve mastered, or simply sit with someone and talk to them. It’s about giving of your time and giving it with love and with compassion.
Here at Digital Express, our owner, Dale Clay, put together an inspired idea! On Tuesday 18th July on Mandela Day 2017 we spent our day putting together care-packages for the homeless. A simple gesture, yet it is one that can make the world of difference in someone’s life.
